Yelagiri Hills for Serenity and Adventure


Yelagiri (Elagiri) is a quaint hill station of Tamil Nadu at a height of 1410.6 meters above the sea level. It is a part of Vellore district and is located off the Vaniyambadi-Tirupattur road. Verdant surroundings of the valleys along with orchards and rose gardens make Yelagiri an ideal getaway for tourists. It basically includes 14 hamlets and several temples housed in various hills along with a splendid lake and waterfall.

The most renowned destinations for trekkers are Jalagamparai waterfalls and Swamimalai Hill at a height of 4338 feet. The beauty of the view from this cake shaped peak is beyond words. There are many trekking trails in these pristine green hills. Javadi Hills and Palamathi Hills are other hills that offer trekking facilities.

Yelagiri is famous for paragliding too. The hills are perfect for this sport and some of the best paragliding events and festivals are held over here. Mountain bikers can have a perfect day out in pedaling in these hills.

Punganoor Lake Park with its lush green landscape is a perfect place for you to enjoy boating or just pass a lazy day with a book.

Nature Park is the place for you to relax and enjoy serenity. The interesting plant species of the rocky terrain, artificial cascade of the waterfall and children’s park add to the charm of the place.  The musical fountain with brilliant lighting is one of the main highlights in the park.

If you do not visit Vainu Bappu Telescope Observatory in Kavalar, your visit to Yelagiri would be incomplete. You can have a splendid view of the night sky through the 93 inches diameter telescope. Timings: 12 AM to 12 AM on Monday to Friday and on Sundays/Public Holidays.

You could also check out the wonderful sculptures of Jalagandeeswarar Temple in the heart of Vellore Fort, Murugan Temple for the spiritual aura and panoramic view of the wonderful landscape as well as Government Herbal Farm for therapeutic medicines.

Make sure you buy some organic homemade honey and jackfruit if you are here during the summer months. You can witness Yelagiri Summer Festival too in the summer months. The dates of 2016 festival are yet to be confirmed.

Reaching Yelagiri Hills

Yelagiri  is around 150 kilometers away from Bengaluru and 250 kilometers from Chennai. Bengaluru is the closest airport. Jolarpettai is the nearest railhead to Yelagiri at approximately 24 kilometers away. Buses or private cabs can be taken from the nearby cities like Jolarpettai and Tirupattur. You can even take  a road trip from Chennai or Bengaluru , the drive is simple awesome.

Stay and Food

Accommodation options are available at Yelagiri and Athanavoor (3 kilometers from Yelagiri Hills) that provide the tourists with a nice and comfortable stay. All types of cuisine can be available here along with some amazing south Indian food.

Yelagiri Hills, though not a very busy hill station is one of the most recommended tourist destinations for experiencing  adventure, relaxation as well as spirituality all at one place.
