There are many who live in cities and are in love with mountains. But then every time we think of a mountain getaway in north India, most of us come up with locations such as Shimla, Mussoorie, Nainital and the likes. If you are the one who wants to go to a place that is really pristine and yet not very far away from Delhi or Chandighar just go to Theog.
Theog is a picturesque town of five Ghats namely the Rahi Ghat, Deori Ghat, Prem Ghat, Jano Ghat and Baga Ghat located in Shimla district of Himachal Pradesh . It is located about 32 km from Shimla at an elevation of 1965 meters.
Theog is known for its beautiful valleys, flower filled rolling meadows, huge expanses of paddy fields and its serenity. It is a place for tranquility, small cozy cottages with fireplaces, long walks in nature, chilled nights, natural beauty and snowfall in winters.
Not much of commercial tourism takes place in Theog, so there are no activities that you can indulge into except for lovely long nature trails and treks. It is a calm and peaceful mountain getaway for a idyllic relaxing holiday.
The Shaali Bazaar is the main market in the town that attracts buyers for local crafts and fresh organic vegetables and fruits like peaches, cherries, apricots, apples, broccoli and cauliflower. There is a popular Banthia Devta Temple here dedicated to Lord Vishnu. The main attraction of the temple is the ten avatars of Lord Vishnu intricately carved on its walls.
You can also visit the scenic Fagu, at about 10 kms from Theog. Fagu is an amazing place for adventure activities like skiing and trekking as it is the base camp for many trekking expeditions. Hatkoti, and Tattapani with hot sulphur springs are some of the interesting places near Theog that you can visit on a daytrip.
Stay and Food
There are not many places to stay in Theog. For budget travellers the best bet is guesthouse of Himachal Pradesh Public Works Department, that offers a comfortable stay. There are many small private hotels too along with a few hotels that offer 4 start facilities.
The nearest airport is in Shimla, Jubbarhatti; 45 kms away and Chandigarh Airport is 73 kilometers away from Theog. The nearest railhead is Kalka at 105 kms away. It is well connected to most major cities in India like Delhi, Calcutta and Mumbai. You can also drive down to Theog from Delhi , it is approximately 380 kms away. If you plan to take a bus , you need to get down at Shimla and take another bus or a can till Theog.
