Thenmala in Kerala is India’s first planned eco-tourism destination. Located 72kms from Thiruvananthapuram, Thenmala is a small village at the foothills of Western Ghats and is picturesque forest area. Nature trails dotted with waterfalls, wildlife sanctuary and virgin forests attract naturalists, conservationists and adventure seekers alike to Thenmala. With its forests, tea plantations, wildlife and rubber estates Thenmala is the perfect destination for leisure and adventure activities.

Ecotourism Activities

The Eco-tourism in Thenmala is divided into Culture Zone, Leisure Zone and Adventure Zone.

Culture Zone: Shop eat and fall in love with Kerala’s culture here. There is a amphitheater, shopping area and restaurants too.

Leisure Zone: Walk on the wooden walkaway leading to the Thenmala dam and enjoy lovely sights. The suspension bridge over the river is fun especially so for kids. There are some soft trekking and biking trails too for the kids and adults alike.

Adventure Zone: Enjoy Nature Trail , take the elevated walkway for a journey that winds through the canopy of trees. Try Mountain Biking , Rock Climbing & Rappelling , River Crossing and much more.

Trekking  : One to three-day guided trekking tours and bird watching trails in the Shenduruney Wildlife Sanctuary.

Boating in the Wild: Battery-operated silent boats rides to Shenduruny Wildlife Sanctuary to watch wildlife at close quarters.

A walk on tree tops : A 120-m long elevated walkway touching the treetops in the middle of forest with 109 steps and few adventure activities.

Thenmala Eco-Tourism is open round the year and there are conducted tours organized by the Kerala Tourism Development Corporation from the Capital City of Thiruvananthapuram and also by the District Tourism Promotion Council of Kollam District.
