Sandakphu – The Trekkers Wonderland

Sandakphu at 11,941 ft is the highest peak in the state of West Bengal, India. It is also a a scenic village and a trekkers delight. Located at the edge of Singalila National Park, near Darjeeling ,Sandakphu offers the  best view of the majestic Kangchenjunga.

Trekking Haven, Sandakphu

It is a widespread belief that trekking was initiated in India in Darjeeling some 90 years ago. And thus then Sandakphu trek also known as “Trekkers Wonderland” in Darjeeling is a must try by all mountain enthusiasts. The view of Kanchenjuga from Sandakphu is simply breathtaking and leaves you  speechless.

Trekkers here not only get to see some of the best views of Everest, Kanchenjunga, Lhotse and Makalu but also can come across an amazing range and  flora and fauna.  Some of the rare animals that you can come across while trekking here are  the red Rhododendrons, Red Pandas and  Musk Deer. The trekking trail will take you through beautiful forests of pine at the lower altitudes and of  deodars, oaks and firs at higher elevations. The splendid sunrises and the sunsets on the way are an added charm along with green rolling meadows and sleepy hamlets of the Himalayas, lost in time.

Best Time To Go

Sandakphu can get very cold in the months of December to early February. During the monsoon months of July to September the trek can get slippery. So the best months to visit here are from March-June and October-November.

Reaching Sandakphu

Sandakphu can be reached in two different ways, either by car or by trekking .

The nearest aiprport is at Bagdogra, located approximately 158 kms and the nearest railhead is in Siliguri. From here one needs to travel to Darjeeling or Jaubhari by road from where many treks start.

If you do not want to trek and yet visit this lovely place the best option is to, take a 4-wheel drive vehicle like a jeep or a Land Rover from Manebhanjan (26 kms away from Darjeeling) and go all the way up through a gravekl road to Sandakphu. It takes about 5 hours to reach. The distance from Manebhanjan to Sandakphu is about 32 kilometers.

Stay and Food

There are a few good hotels and logdes at Sandakphu that offer a nice a comfortable stay. For trekkers there ate several huts along the way to stay. As for food most of the hotels offer good and hygenic local food like noodles and thukpa.
