Himachal Pradesh is truly a paradise for people who love to be in the lap of nature. Snow fall, Himalayan ranges and exotic travel destinations are all synonymous to this Indian state. Rakcham village in the Kinnaur district of Himachal Pradesh is truly an inspiration for India. Through untiring efforts and dedication of the fellow inmates, this village has managed to be the cleanest place of India.
The transition from Trash can to Paradise
Rakcham at one point of time was just a small dirty village in Himachal with no recognition. It transcended to be a spick and span village through the joint efforts of all the inmates of the village.
It is truly worthwhile to witness such an amazing place. In the year 2008, the village received the “Nirmal Gram” Award. Recently on the Independence Day 2015, the village received the Maharshi Valmiki award on district level. Check out this award winning village of India and you would surely get stunned that there is not even a bit of rubbish strewn on the streets.
Reasons to visit and things to do in Kinnaur
Visit Rakcham, the 10500 feet high village whenever you happen to be in Kinnaur. You can take an 11 kilometer walk from Batseri to Rakcham. The cedars, steep cliffs overhead and village fields add to the beauty of this hike. Besides Rakcham, you can explore other regions of Kinnaur too.
The best way to do so is trekking. If you are planning a trekking excursion, May to October is the best time to experience Kinnaur and Spiti Valley. You can get to see wonderful landscapes of Himalayan mountain ranges from here. Narkanda, Shimla, Kufri, Lahaul and Manali are other interesting places that you can visit near Kinnaur. Snow sports like skiing can also be practised at Narkanda and Kufri.
You can get an idea of traditional architecture of Kinnaur at Sangla Valley.
Phulech Festival that takes place in September or October is quite interesting to witness if you are at Sangla during this time. Villagers all over Kinnaur fill the temple courtyards with fragrant flowers and oracles perform sacrifices as well as predict the future at the time of this festival.
If you are planning to visit it in December, plan your trip during 10th to 12th December so that you can even get a glimpse of the International Himalayan Festival at McLeod Ganj, around 400 kilometers from Kinnaur.
All in all, Kinnaur and the places around make for an ideal vacation trip. Do not forget to taste Kinnauri apples if you happen to be here.
Take some as a souvenir for your close relatives and friends too or invite them on an apple pie party after returning back.
