Ancient Fort and Majestic Girnar Hill of Junagadh, Gujarat


Junagadh of Gujarat an ancient fortified city of historical significance. It is also popular as the only natural habitat of Asiatic lions ,a center for embroidery of gold and silver, perfume and most impressive copper and brass vessels.

Junagadh as a Tourist Destination

Situated in the foot of Mt.Girnar , a holy site for Hindus and Jains, numerous sightseeing places await you at Junagadh. Its vicinity to Gir National Park and many ancient temples has made it one of the most sought after tourist destination.

Girnar hill at an altitude of 3630 feet from sea level used to be a volcano in ancient times. There are delicately carved magnificent Jain temples, built between 1128 to 1500, in Girnar Hills that attract a huge number of Jain devotees. The 22nd Teerthankar of Jains, Neminath is assumed to have passed away on Mount Girnar after a life of 7 centuries. There is a marble shrine with his black statue and this is a highlight of the place.

You can even visit Mallinath Temple, a temple dedicated to Goddess Amba at the peak of Ambaji and Gorakhnath Peak. Even non photographers would get tempted to try their photography skills on the beautiful panoramic view from the mountain peaks.

Uparkot Fort is the most ancient fort here and is believed to have been built by the Mauryan emperor Chandragupta in 319 BC. The fort has some splendid places inside like the  Jami Masjid , Buddhist caves and rock cut step wells known as the Adi-Kadi Vav .

The shrine of Saint Narsinh Mehta, the most admired poet of Gujarat, is also housed in Junagadh. Muchakanda Cave is another place of tourist interest for the Muchakanda Mahadev Shivlinga established by Rishi Muchakanda. There is a temple dedicated to Lord Krishna inside the cave along with another shivalinga built by Lord Krishna.

Head to Willingdon Dam you want to enjoy nature and set yourself free from the tiredness and worries inside the park. Kids would surely have a great time at sakkarbaug zoo. It even has a museum attached  to the zoo.

Around Junagadh

Plan a jungle safari to Sasangir, 55 kilometers from Junagadh. You should start early morning for the best wildlife experience. 6 AM, 9 AM and 3 PM safaris are available over here. The early morning and 3 PM safari are perfect to spot lions.

Reaching Junagadh

The nearest airport is at Rajkot at about 100 kilometers from here. You can take a bus or cab from Rajkot to reach Junagadh. Junagadh has its own railhead and it is easily accessible from many major cities of India like Delhi and Mumbai. Junagadh is well connected by road to Ahmedabad (360 kms) and  Vadodara (390 kms).
