Vagamon – A Surreal Hill Station in Kerala


Sprawling over 2000 acres in Idukki and Kottayam districts, at the edge of Periyar and Idukki Sanctuaries, Vagamon is a splendid hill station in Kerala for nature and adventure lovers. The scent of tea plantations, lush green meadows, deep maze-like valleys and a vast expanse of pine forests make it an enthralling travel destination.

Paragliding and trekking draw majority of the tourists to verdant Vagamon.

Trekking trail starts from Elamkadu in Idukki district (16 kilometers from Mundakkayam) and ends at Kolahalamedu in Vagamon. The pleasantly cool weather makes it a place that can be explored by trekking, throughout the year.  Throughout the trek, you companion will be the nature where the only sound echoing in your ears would be the whooshing of the breeze, chirping of the birds and your footsteps. The only sight would be of mist, the blue sky and greenery all around.

Viliyanth, Pullakayar, Thoniyamkadu Forest and the origin of Manimala River add even more charm to the trek.

Vagamon has all the suitable weather needs and ambiance for paragliding. You can get yourself registered for tandem paragliding and its training programs in Vagamon in the month October and the skills.

While you are at Vagamon,  climb the rock to Kurishumala (4 kilometers) and have a panoramic view of the hills and plains underneath. The Meenachil River originating near Vanilla County (a plantation homestay nestled amidst vanilla, coffee, pepper and rubber plantations) presents for a magnificent sight. The origin of this river is precisely at Illikal Peak. A trek to the top of this peak is a memorable experience for trekkers who are willing to check out the origin of the rivers that have made Kerala God’s own country.

Maramala Waterfalls is a must visit place that would be an absolute treat for the tourists. The water gushing down the hillocks has given rise to a natural water body amidst the boulders.

How to Reach Vagamon

This amazing hill station in Kerala can be reached only by road. The nearest airport is at Cochin at a distance of  93 kms. Vagamon does not have a train station, the nearest station is Kottayam, at a distance of 43 kms.
