Gulmarg: The Meadow of Flowers

Gulmarg, in Jammu and Kashmir  is one of the most scenic hill stations in India. With its unmatched natural beauty and rolling meadows  it is aptly known as  the ‘meadow of flowers‘. Gulmarg is an all-weather  destination be it winter, spring or  summer.

In summers the refreshing green  meadows and pastoral scenes here keep you enchanted. In spring the valley turns into a riot of colours with numerous blooming flowers like  daisies, forget me nots, buttercups and blue bells. Come winters and Gulmarg turns into the most sought after skiing and snowboarding destination of India.   Ice skating and tobogganing are also quite popular here. The slopes of Gulmarg make it Asia’s only heli-skiing resort.

Head here to enjoy the world’s highest Gulmarg gondola ski lift and stunning views. With more than 100 gondolas  the wait for a ride from 2690m to 5000 m is never too long.

The high altitude Gulmarg Golf Club offers opportunity to the tourists to be a part of the tournaments held by providing temporary memberships to the golfers. And even if you are not a golfer this place is a favourite tourist haunt due to the lush green slopes and the unparalleled natural beauty. The golf season begins from May and lasts up to mid-October every year.

Khilanmarg valley, at about a 6-km from Gulmarg bus stop and car park is the meadow, that gets carpeted with flowers during the spring and is the prime skiing site. It  offers the best view of Nanga Parbat  and  the picturesque peaks of Nun and Kun.

Do visit the Alpather Lake and Sonmarg while here. Alpather Lake is around 13 kilometers from Gumarg and you can see flecks of floating ice in this lake even during summers. The Gulmarg Biosphere Reserve is the best place to witness the glorious flora and fauna of Himalayan range and the best time to watch the wildlife is September to March.

There are many good vegetarian and non-vegetarian restaurants and eateries in Gulmarg that serve delicious and hygienic food . In the non-vegetarian food the traditional Rogan Josh is a must taste.

Reaching Gulmarg

The nearest airport is in Srinagar just 56 kilometres away. It is a domestic airport and is well connected to major cities in India like Delhi, Mumbai and Amritsar by regular flights. Jammu is the nearest railway station, at 290 kilometres. Gulmarg is well connected by scenic roads from cities like Srinagar, Sonmarg and Jammu.
