Bhagirathi is around 300 kilometers long and the rafting course extends for 140 kilometers. There are a total of over 100 rapids on the entire 140-km expedition down to Rishikesh.
The beginning point of Bhagirathi River rafting is at Tehri Dam (83 kms from Rishikesh) and stretches to grade 3 and 4 rapids known as Elephant Rock, The Shoot, Sharpsuttand Confluence Rapids at the upper half. The lower half starts at the confluence of Alaknanda and Bhagirathi River, in Devprayag, with some of world-class rapids. From here its Ganga and the rafting gets smoother till Kundaliya. The final destination for rafting is Rishikesh.
The expedition typically lasts for 4-7 days and there are many halts to ease the demanding nature of the sport. The jungles through which the river meanders is not only panoramicbut also rich in wildlife and with luck, one can spot deer and leopards too. The instructors on the raft are expert rafters and the participants are trained before the expedition begins. First-time rafters and non-swimmers can also participate.
